The 999 Club has been
involved with prisoner resettlement projects for some years now, taking
prisoners nearing the end of their term and giving them work experience.
In the past we’ve had prisoners from MHP Blantyre House and in 2006 we
developed a relationship with HMP Latchmere House.
The women have
proved a great success. They love helping others and chatting to and
‘looking after’ the people who use the centre. One of the women
explained just how much working here means to her when she said, ‘The
Doctor wanted to sign me off sick yesterday, but I was determined to
come in today. I really enjoy it, it’s just the sort of work I was
looking for – to get involved and help in people’s lives. I love it.’
For the 999 Club, it
means that we have a pool of enthusiastic and dedicated volunteer
workers. For the prisoners, it marks the start of a new era and it gives
them the opportunity to ‘pay back’ something to society, and that is
something which they ALL feel.
