Many of our users have
difficulties with reading and writing and this is very commonly linked
to low self-esteem. It’s hard for older people
to admit they have literacy problems. We have
a qualified teacher
who spends several afternoons every week at Downham.
Our volunteer has had great
success with children for whom the school system has, for a variety of
reasons, not been a great success – so much so that local schools have
even contacted the Downham centre to say how much they appreciate the
help she gives and to let us know just what a difference it makes to the
child’s whole school life – academic and social.
